two Yuletide recs Dec. 30th, 2009 @ 04:32 pm
[info]mctabby
Yuletide reading glee continues! So remiss with the reccing, this year - otherwise occupied, seriously - but can't resist pointing to these two gems. Go look! :D

A Candlelight Supper to Remember [Keeping Up Appearances/Harry Potter crossover]
PG-13, gen with misc. het&slash references - 3,600 words
Okay, so Harry has to spend the winter holidays with Aunt Hyacinth... (Lily, Petunia, Daisy, Rose, etc. - full marks to author for using the floral names as a crossover point, hee!) - and things go a bit pear-shaped from there, inevitably. Other HP characters in this fic: Ron, Arthur, and Snape. Yes, Snape in the Bouquet residence - yes, you've gotta see this! - OMG, Hyacinth and all the others are most perfectly themselves, and the results made me giggle uncontrollably.

Somewhat Akin to a Limpet [Blackadder II]
PG, gen with a touch of het - 6,700 words
The second Blackadder's my favorite, and yay mystery-Yuletider for producing a delightful backstory: Edmund and Percy as teenagers - how they meet, how Percy's determined to be Edmund's friend, and how Edmund tries to get rid of him... All in Edmund's first-person PoV, and it works so well - written in fluent crack-Tudor, just like the show; Edmund, Percy, and Baldrick are facepalmingly fabulous younger versions. Much fun, this fic.

Panic RPS Fic for WIP Amnesty: Nature Boy, Brendon/Ryan, 1200 words, R Dec. 30th, 2009 @ 10:50 am
[info]marksykins
More end of the year WIP Amnesty. This is Brendon/Ryan sex pollen porn set during the cabin days. Or rather, it's all of the sexy lead-up and a bit of the porn.

Nature Boy, Brendon/Ryan, implied GSF, R, 1200 words. Warnings: dubious consent and a never-to-be finished WIP

When Brendon finds him, Ryan is curled up on the couch, an ancient afghan thrown over his legs. His eyes are half-closed and he's petting his own face. )

  • H/D, The Trouble with Good Sense by Anonymous.

THIS FIC IS FANTASTIC. It's hilarious and UST-filled and intense and engaging and charming and adorable, and did i mention HILARIOUS, oh my god i laughed so hard, and then my heart nearly pounded out of my chest from all the delicious tension.
Potter blew out a breath and took Draco’s chin firmly in one hand. “I said hold still.” Draco did the next best thing: he froze. It was hard not to with five of Potter’s fingers warm on his face. And it was damned irritating to find himself accidentally following one of Potter’s orders. Potter touched his bruised eye gently with the damp cloth. It did feel good. Draco held still while the cloth made its way over his cheekbone, cooling the bruised skin there. Potter put the cloth down and rubbed ointment into the bruise with two fingers. Draco may have stopped breathing. A bit.

Finally, Potter wiped off his hand and picked up his wand. He leaned in very close to Draco’s face, brows lowered in concentration. “All right. Don’t move or this will go pear-shaped.”

And then Potter proceeded to breathe on him.
I LOVE IT SO MUCH, and it seriously does not have nearly enough reviews, so I'd love it if more people ran over and read it (it's an easy-to-munch 7,000 words!) and showed the author some love. ♥

also this fic has the best line ever, "I DIDN'T RISE FROM THE DEAD TO BE LECTURED TO BY FASCISTS!" and i seriously am going to write fic where harry just goes around declaiming "I DIDN'T RISE FROM THE DEAD FOR (X ANNOYING THING!)", just see if i don't. scream. i love this fic. :D Also also, Kara adds, "omg this fic is full of canon detail metaphors, my favorite thing in fics ever. two Fwoopers with one stone! acting like I had the Bundimun Blight! sloshed house elf! WHY DOES NO ONE ELSE ADD THESE DETAILS INTO THEIR FICS, THEY MAKE ME INSTANTLY FALL IN LOVE."

GO, READ, I KNOW YOU WISH TO INSTANTLY FALL IN LOVE WITH US <33333

  • Cinderella (fairy tales), for Yuletide. Ash the Stablehand, by Anonymous. Quick, clever, and elegant. I was suckered into loving this before I could stop myself.

  • H/D, fanart rec, The Day Before the War, by Anonymous.

I love the story that's being told here. The art and the composition are gorgeous, but even more I love what this piece says about H/D. it's one of the starkest portrayals of the transformative quality of this ship that I've seen in a while. It's beautiful, and it made me teary. :(

  • Friday Night Lights!!!! there is so much amazing FNL fic here at A03 that I'm a bit overwhelmed by it all. In fact--

There are a bunch of Friday Night Lights recs behind the cut, because they got too numerous for me to cope with!!!!!! )

So! anybody have any non-h/d holidays harry/draco fics you've enjoyed lately? I'm in the mood. :)

  • Panic RPS Fic for WIP Amnesty: Offbeat, Ryan/Spencer, 10,500 words, R Dec. 29th, 2009 @ 09:51 pm
    [info]marksykins
The WIP Amnesty I promised all of you! I started writing this about a year ago, and I've come to the conclusion that I'm never going to finish it, but it's 10,500 words, so it seems like a waste to never put it anywhere. It's Ryan/Spencer, where Spencer is having a bit of a whatever crisis happens before you turn 30. He's recently divorced and has joint custody of his son, and he's just messed up enough that he winds up letting Ryan take care of him for once. I fully admit that last part was my motivation for the fic. I threw my outline at the end so it's not left on a total cliffhanger.

I had really planned on finishing it, but it's so obviously a pre-split canon fic that I couldn't figure out how to salvage it and lost my motivation. Which is too bad because I actually like my writing here, and if you've ever talked with me about my writing, you'll know how unusual that is. Ash is the only person who's read it so far and I hope she won't be too disappointed by me giving up on it. :D

God, I hope this fits in one LJ post.

    (Late) Yuletide Recs Dec. 29th, 2009 @ 11:15 am
    [info]marksykins
I haven't gotten around to reading anyone else's Yuletide recs because I've been unbelievably busy and the archive is slow so I barely got through the stuff I wanted to read by sight alone, but here's some stuff I liked.

First, for me! I got not one, but two Community fics, one full-length and one Yuletide treat:

Ragged Edges, various permutations of Annie/Abed/Troy and Jeff/Annie, M, 3600 words - Really cute! I didn't expect to get both Annie/Abed/Troy and Jeff/Annie when I said I'd be fine with either of them, but I'm happy I got them. I like the idea of Annie finding herself a lot.

Friendly Rivalry, Abed/Troy & Annie/Troy, G, 410 words - Annie and Abed fighting over Troy by proving how much trivia they know about him! :D Such a cute little moment between them and Troy cracked me up.

    Other recs:

13 more recs in 11 different fandoms )

Later today, WIP amnesty. The time to stop fooling myself is over. :D

Yuletide rec: Beauty and the Beast (fairy tale) - Queer as the Fork Dec. 29th, 2009 @ 02:59 am
    [info]bookshop
At some point I will probably have multiple Yuletide recs, but for now, I am too beside myself to do anything but say oh my god read this fic right now.

i would cut off my right arm right now if it meant that i could write like the author of this fic. just. amazing. i am so blown away by the voice and the craft and the style. just. completely fucking blown away.

my review: oh my god. i don't even have words for this. You're an incredible writer, and when reveals go up I'm going to read everything you've ever written.

thank you so much for this. i've read so many "progressive" fairy tale reworkings throughout yuletide, but this is the best of them all. the luggage under her eyes. woke up to the smell of delicious. breathed like a marathon. the highwayman. he's only human. she came with him.

you are so fantastic. please rewrite all fairy tales ever. please. i just. i can't tell you how necessary it feels that you keep writing and putting your voice into the world, because i want everyone, forever, to hear it, and to feel the way I do about this story, right now.

PLEASE DROP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND READ THIS FIC AND TELL THE AUTHOR S/HE IS AMAZING.

    Anonymous 2009 confessions meme. Dec. 28th, 2009 @ 09:26 pm
    [info]bookshop
okay, so i am really in the mood for a meme where we share confessions about 2009, and our fandoms, and our hopes and dreams, and the world, and each other.

so that's what this is. you can comment anonymously or as yourself.

it's just been sort of a... really rough year for me? i think i would like the catharsis of an open space where we talk about ourselves and what's going on with each of us. i need that right now.

trolling and wank will be deleted ruthlessly at my discretion (and if it gets flooded with meme trolls, i'll just screen all comments automatically until i feel like i can deal with wading through the insults).

Also, i want [info]tl__dr to comment on this post, so i'm stealing a meme from her: If you had me alone, locked up in your house for twenty-four hours and I had to do whatever you wanted me to, what would you have me do?

2009: Yuletide, Top 10 lists, Happiness, etc. (you belong with me) Dec. 28th, 2009 @ 02:32 am

Let me explain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up.

  • YULETIDE!!!!!!!! I totally cheated and signed up twice (don't try this at home, kids), because I had too much love in my heart for YT this year, omfg. So I signed up twice and got two amazing
    fics:

    - I got fanfic for Liar - the amazing YA novel by Justine Larbalestier: "You think you know" by Anonymous (aka my new true love).
It's vital that you not be spoiled for Liar before reading it, so this is one fanfic I'm loathe to recommend for those who haven't read the book. (The book is fantastic, btw, one of my favorites of the year.)

One of the things that I absolutely adore most about this fic is that it doesn't just pick up and keep running in circles with the complex themes of the original story--it could be so easy to do that. But instead this fic picks up the complexity of Micah's narrative, and all the themes of lies, identity, gender and sexual confusion, and expands them. Reading this fic is like seeing a whole new layer of the original story being carefully and deliberately peeled back while you watch. It's enthralling. It's also hot, creepy, and beautiful, just like the original fic. Micah's voice is tough, tender, and perfect. The writing is fantastic, and I love how much thought the author has obviously put into the many mysteries and unanswered questions of the original story. Sarah is also a joy to behold in this fic, and the relationship between her and Micah, as they struggle to deal with the aftermath of canon, felt believable and real and raw.
But I still felt a shiver run up my spine when I had those clothes in my hands, when I looked Sarah straight in the face, at the challenge in her eyes, and started to put them on. Mostly I wear things that are neither male nor female, make me look half one thing and half another. But it always felt good when I was naked with Zach and he looked at my breasts and my belly and my hips and told me I was beautiful. It felt good, watching Sarah watch me, with the reflection of a well-dressed boy in the mirror at the corner of my eye.

Guh. This is one story I don't want to let go of. It may be my favorite Yuletide gift ever.

-I got absolutely brilliant Mystery Science Theatre 3000 fic!!!!!!!!! King of Your Satellite Castle by Anonymous
I'm sorry, Mr. Nelson. We've contacted your previous 'enslavers''at the Gizmonic Institute. They claim that you are a ravening necrophiliac and cock-fighting aficionado with a penchant for enjoying Ed Wood films. And also that they've never employed … er, 'enslaved' you, in any capacity. Ever. Good day.

I can't even really describe this fic. It's incredible. It's brilliant and funny and excellent. It is my new personal canon. Excerpt: No, he thought to himself, no. I'm not a prisoner anymore. I don't have to wake up in a cold sweat, dreaming of being strangled by celluloid. I will never again have to stare into the labyrinth of Tor Jonson's eyebrows. I mean. Just. *flails* It's post-MST canon, which is amazing enough on its own, its elegantly written, sparse, hilarious without being crackfic (!!!!), and it's PEARL/MIKE, OH MY GOD YES. It has amazing lines like periodic clouds of people, bedecked in trendy sunglasses and holding small dogs (!!!!!!!) and He found the spidery gold robot relaxing on the couch, a remote clutched in one implausible hand. He was watching the food network, his bulbous eyes shot through with simulated veins. CROW. omg i love crow, he is perfect in this fic. And Mike! oh, my god. There's such a terrible hilarious pathos to this fic:

Every Wednesday night the local television station broadcast a terrible, terrible film. Crow discovered it first, shortly after Gypsy escaped from the basement and fled to the west coast to make her considerable fortune. At first Mike was scornful: why should I spend my Wednesday night glued to the couch, watching Bela Lugosi point at things ominously and John Carradine smooth his grossly over-oiled locks? But gradually, gradually he found himself drawn to the familiar cocoon of horrific cinema.

it speaks for itself, really. i just. this fic. i don't have the words, and i love it so much. it's so smart and brilliant and hilarious, WHY ARE YOU NOT READING IT YET.

Yuletide was so good to me this year.

  • Guess which fics I wrote, you guys! :D

  • my big christmas present this year was not, as i had been led to believe, a shiny trip to Europe or Japan. Oh, no. It was a shiny pan flute. A PAN FLUTE. :DDDDDDDDDD A pan flute with a terrifying bird/Wookiee hybrid carved on the front of it. I am calling it Chewbeaka.

  • am busily in the process of falling in love with my BRAND NEW SHINY TAYLOR SWIFT DVD OMG.

******actual scene at my house in TN over christmas hols*****
Mom: I know you won't like this, but let me explain--
    Me: *shriek* OMG TAYLOR SWIFT!!!
    Mom: ...wait, really?
Me: OH TAYLOR, NOTHING CAN COME BETWEEN US *_*

  • "I'm in a blissful state of like -- 'oh, i just put a corset on and i can still breathe!' " <-- please someone write me taylor swift/david archuleta fluff. please. the world needs this. i need this.

  • Friday Night Lights still amazing beyond description. this tumblr may be the best thing the FNL fandom has ever done (except where is Lyla Garrity???????) MATT SARACEN AND PRETTY LITTLE DRAGONFLIES. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE WORLD RIGHT NOW.

    Top 10 lists, 2009:

Top 12 favorite fanfics I read this year: )

Top 11 favorite books I read this year: )

I don't think I have any other lists to make. Oh dear. Perhaps I will crib an end-of-year meme. This year was hugely significant for me in a lot of ways, but they aren't really ways I can dwell on. I will just end by saying: goodbye and pax, 2009. Thank you for helping me grow.

2010, you are shiny and perfect, and I will try my utmost not to mess you up. ♥

So! Yuletide! I hope you are all enjoying yourselves wallowing in all the fic. I got an Elfquest story, odorous smoke and breathing flower about Dart (yay Dart!) and I am pleased with the reception of my story, which the recipient seems to like, and it has garnered enough comments that I can bask in the confirmation that the few people familiar with this fandom like it too. (I doubt very much that it is guessable, but hey, if'n you wanna try, you can PM me. I will say that I have mentioned the source in this journal, and it's something I've not written before.)

Yep, I only wrote one story this year, although I tried and failed to get a pinch hit, and I started two treats that I ended up not finishing. Which I am glad about, actually, because the one will be better as a NYR with time to really make it good, and the other was already written - much better than my partial attempt - by [info]penknife (not as part of Yuletide) as Trade, which is Lord John Grey/Captain Jack Sparrow PWP. I have a few other NYRs planned, though - maybe I will set myself the challenge to write one a month, or something like that. There are so many wonderful prompts!

So, speaking of Lord John, there are three Lord John stories (well, four if you count one that is filed under Outlander, which I didn't care for because I don't like the pairing) and they are all lovely (and I beta-read one), but I have to single out An Unexpected Admirer (Lord John/OC) because 1) one of my requests was for Lord John/OC, so I can kind of consider it a prezzie for me, and 2) it's the pinch hit I failed to get that the nascent Lord John/Captain Jack would have been for, and 3) it's just delightful. And incidentally speaking of Lord John and crossovers, I just a few days ago finished Drums of Autumn and now I really really want Lord John/Thomas Jefferson, or some real or invented male relative of Jefferson, because EEE Lord John lives in Virginia just before the Revolution! And he canonically has a thing for tall redheads! As many of you know I have a soft spot for RPF crossovers, so, please, someone write this for me, or I may be forced to do so myself.

Another fandom in which I kind of want to wave my hand and blanket rec everything is the Oxford Time Travel Universe, or rather, the three stories involving Verity Kindle (I haven't read the other two stories) which are each and every one awesome.

Speaking of time travel (which this isn't, but...sort of is) and RPF crossovers, the coolest crossover ever is Complimentarity. This is an amazingly satisfying historical RPF/Chronicles of Amber crossover, in which Werner Heisenberg discovers the shadow worlds of Amber.

And now for something completely different. I'm referring, of course, to zombies.

The Battle of Carthage: A Previously Unpublished Account of the Zombie War - Santa, Wal-Mart, and zombies. The most heartwarming Christmas story ever!!!1!one! You don't need to have read World War Z (the source) to enjoy this one.

Wait Wait Don't Eat Me - Peter Sagal et al in the face of the zombie apocalypse. Damn, I should have pledged more during the last NPR fund drive. It helps to have heard the show, but again, you don't really need to.

Another story which you can read and enjoy without really knowing the fandom is the Ocean's 11 RPF Spice Up Your Life With George and Brad which is a wildly funny gen "interview transcript" complete with links to other interviews and quotes. I have no idea what Brad Pitt and George Clooney are really like, but I want to meet these versions! (Disclaimer: I know who wrote this, because I uploaded it for her. Also, she thinks I'm awesome, but that has no bearing on the rec.)

I have never read the Pigeon series by Mo Willems, but I did read the awesome due South parody by [info]catwalksalone, Don't Let Kowalski Interview the Perp, and that was all I needed to understand The Pigeon Wants a Story. Heck, you don't even need that much to enjoy this metafic. The pigeon signs up for Yuletide. Hee!

Completely different, but also standing alone, is Signal to Noise which is based on Thomas Dolby's song Airwaves. It's a lushly gritty dystopian short story that feels a little like the world of China Mieville's Perdido Street Station. And although guessing Yuletide authors is something I rarely do, this one feels to me like [info]femmequixotic might have written it.

And now a few recs for stories which don't really stand alone, that is: you probably need to know the fandom. But I have been preferentially reading stories in fandoms I adore, along with stories which have been recced in fandoms I have a passing familiarity with, so maybe these will tip the balance for some of you:

Thinking Like a Machine (Bon Cop Bad Cop, David/Martin) - Awesome banter and a perfect (perfectly infuriating!) David.

Red and Blue Roses (Hornblower, Hornblower/Bush) - Lovely Bush POV. I love his perspective on Maria and on his position and duty, the contradictions and constraints of his relationship with Hornblower. The language is lovely and so evocative of the characters and the period.

Reaping the Whirlwind (Northern Exposure, Joel/Marilyn) - What I love about this is that I can hear everybody speaking their lines. It all seems very fitting and in-character, and okay, I admit it, I got a little teary-eyed at the end.

Gillyflowers (Brideshead Revisited, Charles/Sebastian) - I'm rewatching the miniseries right now, so this hit me hard. The language is amazing, very true to the source. And somehow it all feels very sad to me, as though it encompasses everything I know is going to happen after their enchanted time.

I had better stop now! And there is so much I haven't read yet, a lot of fandoms I know and love, and OMG there are all the ficlets in Yuletide Madness, too...

    Yuletide: the Gift-Hugging Post Dec. 27th, 2009 @ 02:16 pm
    [info]mctabby
Happy That-Time-of-Year, everyone! *waves, throws links and biscuits*
And the Yuletidery has been exceptionally generous to me this time round. A gift for each of my three prompts - eeeee, it's like a conspiracy of awesome! - I'm reeling. Must share!

On the first day of Yuletide, the Archive gave to me.... a Really Rare Fandom!
El Desdichado by Anonymous No. 1: this was the rarest of my requests - for Julian May's Galactic Milieu series and Saga of the Exiles (Pliocene) series [a two-series ouroboros with psychic powers, aliens, time-travel, family dramas, evil beings, spaceships, French-Canadians and Scots!] - and existing fics for this fandom can be counted on one hand, so imagine my glee at getting a shiny new one! And it's all in Atoning Unifex flashbacks; oh, the Unifex-nostalgia-angstiness! Plus, it's got Marc Remillard/Aiken Drum slash - and if that pairing's ever been written before, I'll eat my best hat (which is broad-brimmed leopard-print velour, so you know I'm serious). Anyone out there know/enjoy these books? Go read this fic - it's just delightful!

On the second day of Yuletide, the Archive gave to me.... a Jane Austen Crossover Feast!
The Dancing Monkeys by Anonymous No. 2: found this while Yuletide-browsing, saw my name on it as recipient, and outraged the cats with my shrieking. Ooo, LOOK! Unique fic alert! Mansfield Park/Persuasion crossover! 11,000+ words - all Henry Crawford's PoV - he's gone abroad after breaking up with Maria ex-Rushworth, and he ends up as a visitor on board the Laconia... Ooo, sailors! William Price and Sam Price! Wentworth, Benwick, Dick Musgrove! Age of Sail fans, read it and squee: shipboard life, lots of period details and naval-speak, and a cannon-firing clash with a French ship. Plus lots of Henry-reflections on MP events, the Henry/Maria and Henry/Fanny relationships; and woven between the lines, the Persuasion moments that Henry misses but the reader gets. (Bonus for lucky-recipient-me: allusions to the Mary/Maria MP fic I wrote last year, though you don't need any familiarity with that fic to enjoy the crossover.) Austen-fic readers, don't miss this story - it's very fine indeed.

On the third day of Yuletide, the Archive gave to me.... a Meg March Moment!
Flight From Vanity Fair by Anonymous No. 3: with Yuletide Madness now unlocked, the ficlets are pouring forth today... and I've scored one for Little Women! Meg's thoughts before her wedding - and a touch of Meg-Jo dialogue - all kinds of choices and changes and possibilities hovering here. Satisfies my whim to know if Meg ever looked back on the "Vanity Fair" chapter events, and when and how. Take a look, if you fancy a behind-the-scenes-of-canon bit of Alcottness.

    And the Yuletidery continues...
I've been keeping a Yuletide Diary since mid-November - will unlock that post, eventually. Meanwhile, here's this year's guess-McTabby's-story offer. :D Point to the Yuletide fic I wrote, before the January 1 reveal, and I'll gladly rhyme on a topic of your choice! Hints: movie fandom, gen fic, typo-free summary. ([info]aegflota ineligible as guesser, but much appreciated as gentle beta.)

So! i'm convinced that for anyone who's been reading through the fabulous [info]hd_holidays fics, mine* is extremely obvious.

But just for fun, comment here with your guesses! Anyone who correctly guesses which fic I wrote before the reveals will get to request a drabble in a fandom of their choice, or ask 5 questions about any of my fics. :D

*first hd fic in four years, yessss! \o/

Re Yuletide fics, I will just say that this year I wrote three, two of which are in fandoms I have talked about on this LJ before. I don't have any other hints for you, other than that two of them have shown up on rec lists, to my great delight. If anybody guesses any of the three of them before reveals, I will give you five questions *and* a drabble! :)

    Comments screened, of course.

Merry Christmas, everyone! I had a more successful lead-up to the holiday than I usually do; I managed to get out all of my Christmas cards on time, I didn't forget to buy anyone a gift, I got all the way through Christmas Eve dinner, and I wrote so many [info]yuletide fics and treats that [info]sodamnquirky couldn't help laughing at me today. She also proposed an ultimate crossover that I'll have to detail once reveals go up after the New Year.

Thanks to all of you for being your wonderful selves. Some days I have no idea what I'd do without you. ♥

And thank you, suspiciously lowercase person for my new snowflake cookie in my profile!

    happy merry Dec. 24th, 2009 @ 09:35 am
    [info]isiscolo
The end of the year has never been a gift-giving holiday for me; we celebrated a more traditional Hannukah when I was a child, and my nonreligious inlaws celebrate Christmas by eating a lot, drinking Bourbon and playing poker (which I approve of, totally). But that doesn't mean I don't like prezzies! So thank you to [info]mergatrude and [personal profile] mtl (or rather, her characters!) for the cards, and to [info]saramwrap for the squidly cat toy, and to all of you who are posting your year-end music favorites, because yay, prezzies for everybody!

So, speaking of year-end music favorites, here are mine. They tend to the folkish and non-English-language, and I've posted some of them before. Not all of these are new in 2009 but they were all new to me in 2009, and they are the songs that I played the most (with the exception of one I am holding back because it would give away my [info]festivids vid, and the bonus Christmas carols at the end). On my website, feel free to download any or all, no comments required but I do enjoy knowing what people take and what they like. And if you like this kind of stuff and I don't have you friended on LJ, you should subscribe to [personal profile] isis on DW where I will give you access to, um. Stuff and things.

Richard Thompson - Mingulay Boat Song - I have always loved Richard Thompson's growly voice, and I love sea chanty type music, so, match made in heaven for my ears.
Livio Morosin - Stani More - I got this one from [info]triestine, who is one of my sources for amazing music in languages I don't speak. (This one's in Croatian.) I love the gentle repetition, and it translates into a lovely poem.
Mirabai - Aportua - I saw this duo play at our farmers' market, and when I had finished shopping I sat and listened to them until the market was over. Then I bought one of their CDs.
Planxty - Follow Me Up To Carlow - More strident than most of these songs, this is a classic Irish war tale. I bought the album for this song, but the rest of the album is nearly equally awesome.
Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt - Kisses Sweeter Than Wine - I got this reggae-ish cover version from [personal profile] resonant, and I like it best of all the versions I've heard. (I have it by The Byrds and by Peter, Paul and Mary, too.)
Tom Chapin - The Wheel of the Water - Also from [personal profile] resonant, this is the best song about the hydrological cycle I have ever heard. I guess it's supposed to be a kids' song? I don't care. The harmonies are a thing of beauty.
Jeana Leslie and Siobhan Miller - Burning of Auchindoun/Pint of Wine - I shared another song from this album a while back, so here's a different one that I also really love. Gorgeous, ethereal voices, and I totally recommend their album.
Mordewind - Tlusty Szef - A song from the Polish Celtic folk rockers I adore. This is a more bouncy, rocking song than most of the others in this post.
Eels - Mr. E's Beautiful Blues - Got this from someone on my flist, or fflist, and I don't remember from whom, but it's another rocking song that makes me smile.

And as a bonus, have some Christmas music. This first one is a quite awesome mashup arrangement by, would you believe, a high school friend. He posted it on Facebook (shut up, that is what Facebook is for - staying in vague touch with people you don't really want to stay in close touch with) and I was blown away. It sounds very Jethro-Tullish. The second is a more traditional version by the Mediaeval Baebes.

Teejay - Shine On You Coventry Carol
Mediaeval Baebes - The Coventry Carol

    Merry happy, everyone!

Jusso y'all know, the components of my laptop have had a hissy, and it's in the shop. Which means I'm computing on my four-year-old iBook, bless its pre-cambrian heart, and which means every time I want to open a browser tab it's two minutes of Spinning Beach Ball Of Death. (Y!M won't even work, the version's so old.) So I won't be disappearing but my communication will be..let's say select until I get the laptop back.

Work on writing is not hindered. I continue!

In case anyone didn't see, there were some problems with the final deluge of [info]yuletide pinch hits. If you want any of the ones that already went out, you have to email the alternate address in that link, and they're still not sure how the second half are going to go out. Of course it would be Yahoo! that turns out to be the pain in the ass in a year with an entirely new system. :D
